Paying for Things in China

China is nearly cashless — but the system is built for Chinese residents. Here's how to navigate it without a Chinese bank account.

⚠️
Heads up: Most small vendors, street food stalls and local restaurants only accept WeChat Pay or Alipay — not cards or cash. Set up at least one mobile payment method before you arrive.
💬 WeChat Pay — Set Up for Foreigners
Recommended
As of 2023, WeChat Pay supports Visa, Mastercard, and other international cards directly. No Chinese bank account needed.
  1. 1
    Download WeChat
Available on App Store and Google Play. Register with your non-Chinese phone number — this is fine.
  2. 2
Go to Wallet → Add a Card
Tap the bottom-right "Me" → "Services" → "WeChat Pay" → "+" to add an international card. Supports Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Discover.
  3. 3
Top up in advance if needed
Some merchants require you to have a RMB balance. You can top up via your linked international card, though a small conversion fee applies (typically 1.5–3%).
  4. 4
    Pay by scanning QR codes
Either show your QR code to the merchant, or scan theirs. Works at supermarkets, restaurants, taxis, tourist sites — essentially everywhere.
🔵 Alipay International — Alternative Option
Good backup

Alipay has an "International" version that works with foreign cards. Download Alipay (not a local version) and select "Overseas User" during sign-up. Acceptance is slightly narrower than WeChat Pay for small vendors.

ℹ️
Alipay's international mode daily spending limit is around ¥5,000 CNY (~$700 USD). Good for tourists but check if this fits your budget.
💵 Cash — Still Accepted, But Declining
Backup only

Major hotels, department stores and some restaurants still accept cash. Withdraw RMB from Bank of China or ICBC ATMs — they have the best international card support. Avoid airport exchange counters (poor rates).

  • Carry ¥500–1,000 in cash as backup
For rural areas, markets or any situation where your phone battery dies.
  • Best ATMs: Bank of China (中国银行), ICBC (工商银行)
Found in all cities and airports. Look for the UnionPay / Visa / Mastercard logos.
💳 International Cards (Visa / Mastercard)
Limited use
⚠️
Important: Physical card terminals are rare outside 5-star hotels and international chains. Don't rely on swiping your card — mobile payment is the primary infrastructure.

Places that reliably accept foreign cards: international hotel chains, major department stores (SKP, Galeries Lafayette), some airport shops, and Starbucks / McDonald's.
